Book Summary: Khantastic by Sanjukta Nandy

KHANtastic answers all the questions about khans of Bollywood. Destiny binds together this charismatic trio—Salman, Shah Rukh and Aamir. They not only started their journey in Bollywood around the same time but also share vestiges of Pashtun descent in their bloodline.

Over time, their tempestuous rivalry turned into friendship as they became an indomitable triumvirate. Three different, yet magnetic personalities—they form the three points of the invisible Bandra Triangle in Mumbai as their brotherhood reigns permanently over a capricious Bollywood.

How was the childhood of the Khan Trio? How they entered Bollywood and became the invincible? What did they do hero worthy in real life? Do they ever fear losing their stardom?

These are just a sampling of the questions you’ll have answered here! This book, Khantastic by Sanjukta Nandy, is full of anecdotes of these Khan Stars. I was a little surprised at the range. We have everything from their birth to recent fights and reunion, from their flops to the hits, from their ups to downs and ups again until they reached unsurmountable heights in their career.

I’m impressed with how well organized this book Khantastic is. There are different chapters for different phase of their lives, from their struggling years to the days of stardom. Most of the anecdotes are unknown to me, while some are just fascinating. Reading this book is like going on a roller coaster ride of Bollywood tour through the eyes of three Khans and finding out information about your favorite actors.

Sanjukta Nandy is our tour guide through the lives of these Superstar Khans and the forth star in this book. She has researched each tale and has put together a large collection of stories and anecdotes about Bollywood elite cited references or sources from where these anecdotes came from. Though I would suggest Khantastic by Sanjukta Nandy as something to just sit down and read through, it’s definitely a wonderful weekend read. The anecdotes are short enough that you can flip through and read one or two at a time. Beware: each one you read will make you want to read more!

I thoroughly enjoyed the captivating stories of Bollywood’s Khan trio which made them what they are today. Each anecdote starts with the story itself, then adds in two or three “extras” which relate to the story. Some of these stories were familiar to me, but many were surprising. These stories are sometimes inspirational, sometimes humorous and always entertaining. This is a fast read – it is easy to read through three or four stories in just a few minutes and each story is equally fantastic itself. Don’t be surprised if you get so engrossed in this book that you forget to check the time.

True to its title, Khantastic is chock-full of fantastic anecdotes and stories about the Khans, the legends of the Indian Film Industry. This book is the perfect gift for anyone who is a movie buff, especially those fans of Khans. It’s a book that would sit well on a coffee table, in your car, at the office, or anywhere a reader could steal a few moments of fun reading.
